When you start anything new, it takes a whole lot more time and focus to learn it and get to any level of competence.

For example, the first time I picked up a guitar as a kid with the intention to play it, I had no idea what I was doing.

In fact, the only thing I knew how to do was hold it because I’ve seen other people hold a guitar before and it was moderately intuitive.

But anything else?

Forget it.

Pushing the strings down borderline hurt, and picking the strings was so difficult it made me wonder how anyone could make this strange device make music.

But I kept at it.

Years later, I played in front of a crowd of over 200 people and even interviewed for a guitar performance scholarship at Berklee College Of Music.

(I didn’t get the scholarship, but it was a fun experience nonetheless)

Here’s the interesting part…

I stopped playing for a good 7–8 years but recently picked up a guitar and it was like I never stopped.

All those skills I developed over the years were accessible on demand.
