I Spent $890 On Basic Workout Equipment… Is It Even Worth Building A Home Gym?
For the last 9 months, I’ve been training at home and it begs the question:
Is it even worth the cost of building a home gym?
I have a super basic setup consisting of:
- 2 sets of dumbbells, 25lbs and 30lbs
- A single 15lbs kettlebell
- One 45lbs 7 foot barbell
- A pair of 45s, 25s, 10s, 5s, and 2.5s weight plates
- A flat, non-adjustable workout bench
- A squat rack with no safety bars
The total cost was $890 because I got the dumbbells and kettlebell for free from my in-laws.
If I didn’t, that would bring the total to about $1,025.
(and I still have more weight plates, a deadlift platform or rubberized gym flooring, and those squat rack safety bars to buy…)
For that price, you could join a well-equipped gym for 2–3 years depending on the price.
So is a home gym worth the investment?
It depends.
If you don’t have the space for a decent home gym, then it’s probably better to go to the gym.
