The Case Against Working Out Only 3 Days Per Week
Even though I’m a major advocate for training less rather than more, especially considering your typical parent’s busy schedule, lack of sleep, and lower recovery rate…
There’s actually a good reason to train every day…
Which is for the sake of habit building.
You don’t brush your teeth 3 days per week, you brush them twice a day every single day because it’s part of your daily routine.
But if you’re trying to build a habit of exercise, it’s harder to solidify a routine if you aren’t doing it every day.
So in some cases, it makes more sense to train daily to ingrain it into your brain.
For example, let’s say you plan on hitting the weights after you get out of work.
It’s a whole lot easier to bring gym clothes and a water bottle every day for 2 reasons:
-You’re more likely to workout consistently
-You’re less likely to forget necessary equipment
Not only would doing this help you build the habit better, but it’ll also help avoid decision fatigue.
That said, even if you get things ready for a workout every day it doesn’t mean you have to hit the weights.
You can still do the 3 day routine I recommend, and on the other days just do 15–30 minutes of low-impact, steady state cardio.
Crazy enough, that might actually help you get better results due to more activity, as long as you keep your daily diet in check.
