Who Wins In A Fight: Diet Soda Vs Regular Soda

It’s 2024 and people are still debating whether diet soda or regular soda is better for you.

As much as I’d like to end the debate here, due to a priory beliefs the best I can hope to do is possibly put your mind at ease if you have either one.

But first, let’s set a couple things straight:

They both have a bunch of chemicals a lot of people can’t pronounce and and they’re both hydrating although in different ways.

That said, let’s get right into it.

In one corner, you have the classic, full sugar soda.

Some of the strengths:

  • It’s full of flavor
  • It’s a quick energy source
  • There’s no stress about artificial sweeteners

But the potential downsides are:

  • It’s loaded with sugar
  • The calories add up fast
  • It often makes you crave it more

So if you don’t have an issue with sugar, are able to fit it in your daily calorie goal while still hitting key nutrient goals, and like the taste…

It can be a good contender.

In the other corner, you have the infamous diet soda.

Some of the strengths:

  • It’s low or no calorie per serving
  • It can slightly curb hunger on a diet
  • It doesn’t give you that sticky mouth feel

But the potential downsides are:

  • It’s an acquired taste
  • There’s no real energy boost outside of caffeinated versions
  • Aspartame can be scary when not understood

So if you do like the taste, it can be a great option if you’re on a diet and are calorie aware.

Figures… it’s called diet soda for a reason.

But a quick note on two things:

The FDA states that the limit is 50 milligrams per kilogram per day, so for example someone who is 198lbs could have 20 cans of Diet Coke per day to be within that safe limit.
